graduates complete their ensemble with a matching cap (mortarboard) and a tassel. The tassel, attached to the top center of the cap, symbolizes the transition from candidate to graduate. During the commencement ceremony, graduates wear the tassel on one side of the cap, and at a specific moment, they move the tassel to the other side, signifying the official conferral of their degrees.
